But, if you are serious about getting healthy, it is important that you have a firm grasp on them. Here, I will talk about a few basic fitness terms that you might come across to make sure that you work out safely in the gym. Knowing these terms will make you more confident and comfortable with your workouts.
Here are a few common types of exercise equipment that your workout might call for. Knowing them will help you perform your workout correctly.
A barbell is a large metal bar where you can attach weights on the end. With a barbell, you can increase or decrease the amount of weight on one bar. Barbells are a type of free weight because they are not attached to a machine.
A clip is a small device placed at the ends of barbells to hold weight plates in place.
Plates are types of weight meant to slide onto barbells. These types of weight are flat and generally circular in shape.
A dumbbell is similar to a barbell in that it is a large metal bar with weight on both ends. But, a dumbbell has a set amount of weight on it – you can’t attach or detach more weight. Dumbbells are also sometimes referred to as free weights.
A kettlebell is another type of freeweight. The weight is in a kettle shape and there is a handle for you to hold the weight by. Kettlebells are used a lot for squats and similar exercises.
Cables are machines where you lift weight by pulling cables. You can attach many different types of handles to the cables and you can also adjust the height.
There are a lot of different workouts that you can do. To make sure that you do them correctly, you need to understand what they are.
Repetition, or “rep” for short, is a particular movement that you do over and over. For example, if you do 5 reps of push ups, you do 5 push ups. Many times, there is no rest period between repetitions. Sometimes, there is a short rest period.
A set is a series of repetitions. Different numbers of repetitions can make up one set. So for example, if you have 5 reps of push ups, and you do the 5 push ups, that is one set. Then you might take a break and do another set (5 reps).
It is important to let your body recover during your workout. Different routines will have different rest times between reps and sets.
These are just a few common gym terms that you should know if you want to work out more. This information can help you feel more confident in the gym and get the most out of your time there.
