Maybe you just intended to take a week off from your workout routine. You were going on vacation, or you had a busy week, and you figured that a few days away from the gym wouldn’t hurt. But a few days turned into a few weeks. Maybe you’re looking back realizing that months or even years have gone by since you made exercise a part of your routine. The good news is that it doesn’t matter how long you’ve been away from a workout routine. If this is something that you want to start again, you can make some simple changes in your life to do this. Everyone will have different strategies for getting into a workout routine, but here, I will present some simple things that you can do to get in the habit of exercising once again.

Start Now

You don’t have to wait for a certain day to embark on a healthier lifestyle. You don’t have to wait until January 1st, the day after your birthday, or the first of the month to get going, and in fact, you shouldn’t. “Start before you’re ready” is a common saying, and it applies here! There’s no reason not to start as soon as possible. There will always be an excuse or a reason to postpone, but if you just bite the bullet and get started, you will gain momentum.

Start Small

You don’t have to commit to an hour in the gym every day right off the bat. Start with small goals and build towards a solid routine. For example, today you might decide to simply go and get a gym pass and buy new workout clothes after work. Then, start out by committing to going to the gym one day a week. Next week, make it two days a week. The following week, make it three days a week, and so on until you reach a level that you are comfortable with.

You also don’t have to commit to lengthy gym sessions. Start out spending just 20 minutes in the gym. It’s better than nothing! Later on, you can commit to longer workouts if you’d like to.

Determine Your Optimal Gym Time

Our gym is open most hours, every day of the week. Experiment with going to the gym at different times. Maybe you are more comfortable going to the gym during “off hours” – times when there are not many other people in the gym. Maybe you want to start your day off in the gym, or you want to head to the gym right after work. Play around with different times and days – you might be surprised to learn your favorite time to go to the gym.

Make it Fun

Working out doesn’t have to be a chore! You should look forward to your time in the gym and enjoy what you choose to do. We offer many different options, from free weights, to weight machines, to cardio machine options, to classes. Chances are, we have something that will make working out seem like an enjoyable experience. Try out some different workouts and see what you like best.

Don’t Worry About Setbacks

If you don’t reach all of your goals right away, don’t worry. Let’s say you’re not seeing the results that you want to, or you miss a day in the gym. These things happen! What matters is consistency over time, not a skipped workout here or there. Be patient, stick with it, and try harder next week!

Find Your Support System

Starting this process on your own can be difficult. It can be easier if you have a support system behind you. You might want to find a workout buddy, such as a friend, a colleague, or a spouse. This person can motivate you by going to the gym with you, and you can both keep each other on track. If you can’t find someone to work out with you, you can still share your plans and goals with a close friend or family member. Once a week you can check in with this person and discuss your progress.
