We’ve all been there. You had to take two weeks off from the gym due to an injury. You were doing great with losing weight, but now your weight loss has plateaued, or you even notice that you’ve gained back a few pounds. Or maybe you’ve just lost some of the motivation to reach your fitness goals that you had in the beginning. Workout setbacks happen to everyone. Even the most positive, motivated, and disciplined people skip a workout or have a hard time sticking to their plans. But, a setback doesn’t have to be the end of the world! Here are a few ways that you can face your fitness setbacks head on and get back on track.
Acknowledge the Setback and Reflect on Your Goals
If you are struggling with your fitness goals, don’t try to ignore the problem or get through it with sheer force of will. Take some time to examine how you are feeling and why. Also consider your goals themselves and how they may have changed over time. Are you failing to reach your goals because they have become too hard? On the other hand, are they too overwhelming? Consider the specific issues that you are having and what you can do to solve the problem.
Don’t Beat Yourself Up
No one is perfect! Instead of being disappointed in yourself or trying to just plow ahead, go easy on yourself! Maybe you need a few days to focus on other things in your life. Give yourself time to process your emotions, and don’t be ashamed of any negative emotions that you might be feeling. A little break might be just what you need to get your motivation back.
Focus on Your Accomplishments
Even if your progress has slowed down, try to focus on the positives. You have undoubtedly made progress towards your goals and accomplished a lot so far. Reflect on how far you’ve come and remember that health is a constant process. It will take time to reach your goals, so don’t be discouraged if the process is difficult or if it is taking longer than you expected.
Touch Base with Someone Who Wants You to Succeed
It can be hard to reach your fitness goals entirely on your own. Reach out to your support system – whether this is your workout buddy, family members, friends, or your trainer. Talking through the issue you are having and getting the support of someone who wants to help you reach your goals can be inspiring. If you don’t yet have a personal trainer, now might be the right time to get one. If you feel like you have plateaued with your personal trainer, come to BDx and see what we can do for you!
Regroup and Make a New Plan
If your routine isn’t working for you, don’t be afraid to change it. Thinking about new goals or new ways to reach your goals can be beneficial, especially if you feel like you’ve been in a slump lately. A personal trainer can be very helpful in this process. They might have new ideas for how you can tackle your health and fitness goals.
Setbacks will likely happen at some point while you are trying to reach your health and fitness goals. But these setbacks don’t have to stop you in your tracks! By handling the situation correctly, you can get back on the path that you want to be on. If you need help dealing with a setback, contact BDx Fitness – we are happy to help!
