One good way to keep track of what you are eating is to avoid restaurants and cook for yourself. But, cooking for yourself means navigating the grocery store, which can be difficult. Fatty foods, sugary treats, and pre-made junk food are lurking around every corner. To make sure that you are sticking to healthy foods when you go grocery shopping, I’ve compiled a few tips.
Before you step foot in the grocery store, you should have a plan. Write down the meals that you plan on making during the coming week. Make sure that you write down items that you can use for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Also write down some healthy snacks that you can eat. You will likely get hungry between meals, so it is important that you don’t give in to this hunger by buying sugary or fatty snacks. Make sure that you have some healthy snacks, such as fruit, nuts, and vegetables on hand.
As you plan out your dinners, write down the ingredients that you will need to make each meal. If you want, you can plan your meals around the sale items in the store. Look at a coupon book or circular to make sure that you are getting the most bang for your buck.
Stick to Your List
Once you’ve made a grocery list, make sure that you stick to it. When you get to the grocery store, don’t make any impulse buys. One trick for sticking to your list is to eat a meal before going grocery shopping. If you go to the grocery store while you’re hungry, everything is going to look delicious. You might be tempted to put whatever looks good into your cart. If you eat before going to the store, you might find that you have more willpower as you do your shopping.
Another way to stick to your grocery list is by avoiding tempting aisles. Many people suggest that you stick to the perimeter of the grocery store when doing your shopping. The outer aisles tend to have fresh and healthy foods. By staying out of the aisles that are full of junk food, you can avoid temptation altogether.
Choose Canned and Frozen Foods Wisely
Some canned and frozen foods are full of sugar, salt, and fat. However, other types of canned and frozen foods can be very healthy and can work as staples in a good diet. Focus on canned and frozen vegetables if you want to buy canned or frozen foods. Buy vegetables that are not in any juices or sauces so that you are just getting good vegetables and no added sodium or fat. Do the same when buying canned beans or meats. Canned tuna is a healthy source of protein, but try to avoid tuna packed in oil.
Having these foods on hand can help you fight random cravings. When you’re rummaging around in your kitchen for a snack, you might not always have an abundance of fresh vegetables or other healthy foods on hand. You can still eat healthy by taking advantage of canned or frozen foods that are good for you.
